Training at a distance
When training at a distance, there are many different objects that can be used to help your dog to stay in place, such as a mat or raised platform. These training aids give your dog a definitive place to be. However, sometimes you may find the need to train your dog from a distance without the use of a platform or mat to anchor him. This was the case for Ken Ramirez when working with his dog Marlin on The Ranch.
As you will see in the video, Ken kept the distance between he and Marlin short until Marlin learned that he was expected to stay in place. Ken then increased the distance gradually. If at any point Ken went too fast and Marlin moved away from his location, Ken decreased the distance again.
By working slowly and using successive approximations, Ken set Marlin up for success. Marlin was able to quickly learn what was expected of him. Ken says, “Anything is possible when we teach the animal foundational behaviors and build up to the desired response in a positive and constructive manner.”
