Therapy Dog Skills: Remaining Calm Around Medical Equipment
It’s no secret that our dogs bring us comfort and joy, but have you ever wondered how you can train your dog to provide that same comfort and joy to others? Therapy dogs offer comforting benefits to people who are lonely or grieving, and even help people cope with anxiety and trauma. However, to be certified as a therapy dog team, dogs and their handlers must undergo a screening process to ensure that they have the right qualities and skills that are necessary for therapy dog work.
Since many therapy dogs work in hospitals, nursing homes, and other healthcare settings, one of the prerequisites for therapy dog work is ensuring that that dog is comfortable around medical equipment such as crutches, walkers, and wheelchairs. This video by KPA CTP Laurie Schlossnagle shows a dog being evaluated for his ability to remain calm while being approached by a stranger with a walker.
