the harness game
Does your puppy try to run away when you reach for her harness? Hands reaching toward a harness often signifies to puppies that playtime is over. However, it is very important for puppies to feel comfortable when their harnesses are grabbed.
While you want to be able to remove the harness easily after walks, comfort with harness-grabbing can save a puppy’s life. Curious puppies easily find themselves in tempting but dangerous situations, so it’s important to be able to grab a puppy’s harness quickly. How do you teach your puppy that having her harness grabbed is actually a fun and positive experience? Try the harness game!
In this video, KPA CTP Verena Sutherland is teaching her dog Yeti that hands coming toward the harness means good things by turning the harness grab into a game. Each time Verena reaches toward Yeti’s harness, she immediately follows up with a yummy treat. Notice how Verena allows Yeti to cue the next repetition by waiting for him to offer eye contact. This way, he is in charge of the training—no surprise grabs!
