Teaching tactile cues
Cooperative care is about helping dogs feel more comfortable during handling and husbandry procedures—like receiving ear drops or a vaccination—at home, at the vet, or at the groomer. In this video, KPA CTP Shelby Mildenberger and Jenn Ware RVT demonstrate how incorporating tactile cues into cooperative care not only helps dogs to accept procedures but also teaches them to be active and empowered participants. Note how the handlers use muzzles as a safety measure when needed, and always wait for the dogs’ consent (chin rest) before proceeding. They keep their touches brief and rate of reinforcement high!
