teaching a go-around behavior
Interested in a new way to train and have fun with your dog this summer? Try Canine Freestyle! Also known as musical freestyle, canine freestyle is a fun dog sport where dogs and handlers perform dazzling choreographed routines set to music. The routines are built with a variety of behaviors that are strung together in a thoughtful, creative, and artful way.
One behavior that is often included in canine freestyle is the go around—the dog is taught to go around a handler or object. The go-around behavior is often taught by shaping the dog to go around targets or props such as cones or buckets. In this video, KPA CTP Heather Lawson practices go-around using cones. By rewarding the dog at the end of the loop, she is setting the dog up for the next go-around!
