teach your cat to wave
Try training your cat to provide much-needed enrichment, manage unwanted behaviors, and add fun new tricks to the cat’s behavior list. In this video, KPA Associate Director Gretchen Carey and her cat Frankie demonstrate one fun trick: wave!
To teach this behavior:
- Hold a treat in your fist in front of your cat’s nose.
- When your cat extends a paw to investigate, click and treat before your cat makes contact with your hand.
- Repeat, each time raising your fist higher and higher so that the cat cannot touch it but will still try. Click/treat every attempt at first, and then click/treat only the highest waves.
- Once your cat is offering a wave reliably, you can transition from a closed fist to a small hand wave.
