teach non-verbal and verbal cues
New trainers often ask which cues should be used in training: verbal cues or a non-verbal cues? The answer is not an either/or—it’s both! Dogs are attuned to body language, which is why they pick up on non-verbal cues so quickly. However, there are situations where a verbal cue may be more useful, such as when your hands are full or your dog is looking away.
By teaching your dog to respond to both verbal and non-verbal cues, you will be able to communicate clearly with your dog in different situations. In this video, KPA faculty member Laura Monaco Torelli teaches her dog Vito to spin using both non-verbal and verbal cues!
