teach an emergency u-turn
Have you ever been out for a peaceful walk with your dog, rounded a corner, and come face-to-face with another dog—or a child on a skateboard? In an instant, your peaceful walk turns to chaos as your dog barks and lunges at the trigger as you try desperately to move past. What if you could teach your dog to move in the opposite direction instead of lunging toward the trigger?
The emergency U-turn is the first line of defense when encountering another dog or any other situation that your dog might perceive as arousing or threatening. In this video, Karen Pryor Academy (KPA) Certified Training Partner (CTP) Shelly Wood demonstrates how to teach this critical skill as well as what it might look when on a walk. By adding the emergency U-turn to your repertoire, you and your dog will be able to relax and gain confidence on your walks knowing that you can navigate unexpected situations more easily!
