teach an alternative behavior to jumping
In this video by KPA CTP Cari Tetzlaff, a dog named Charlie is learning to settle on a mat when someone comes to the door. Before practicing this behavior, Charlie’s guardian first taught him to go to place. As you will see in the video, his guardian then incorporates mild distractions, such as the sound of the door, sounds coming from the foyer, and the appearance of her entering their home. Once Charlie is comfortable staying on the mat during these distractions, he will practice settling on a mat upon the arrival of other family members and friends. Through positive reinforcement, patience, and consistent training, Charlie is learning to make every guest feel welcome in his home!
