teaching puppies not to bite
You want to interact with your puppy but, ouch, those little razor-sharp teeth! Puppy biting is a completely normal part of puppy development, but it’s important to teach puppies not to bite so that it doesn’t continue into adulthood.
In this video, Karen Pryor Academy (KPA) Certified Training Partner (CTP) Samantha Jan Jackson demonstrates a handling exercise that can help teach puppies not to bite hands that touch them. First, set your puppy up for success by waiting until your puppy is relaxed (not in a super “bitey” mood). Next, begin touching your puppy calmly on different parts of the body. As you touch your puppy, click for contact, remove your hand, and then deliver a treat calmly. It’s important to use regular, not special, food or treats for this exercise so that your puppy does not get too excited. Delivering the treat on the floor provides a head start for the next repetition.
