it's no secret... dog training is fun!
Training your dog is not only essential for teaching life skills and avoid problem behaviors, but it also offers an opportunity for you and your dog to have fun together! In this video, KPA CTP Kristen Lee is teaching her dog Jenna to “tell her a secret.” Kristen trains this behavior by teaching Jenna to nose-target her ear.
To teach this behavior:
- Starting a few feet away from your dog, present your ear at your dog’s eye level. Click and reward your dog simply for looking in the direction of your ear.
- As your dog begins to realize (aha!) that the presentation of your ear earns treats, it is only a matter of time until the dog comes closer to investigate. C/T.
- Continue to raise your criteria until your dog is touching your ear with her nose.
- Once your dog is nose-targeting your ear reliably, add a cue (Kristen’s cue is “Tell me a secret!”).
