introducing dogs to each other
When you are introducing two dogs to each other, first interactions matter. How the dogs interact in their first encounter can set the tone for future interactions. Greetings tend to go best when you introduce the dogs in neutral territory and proceed slowly, so that the dogs can decide if they would like to interact.
In this video, KPA CTP Jill Hassevoort and her apprentice, Sam, are introducing their dogs for the first time. The dogs are desensitized to each other through very gradual exposure. Jill and Sam begin by letting the dogs see each other through opposite sides of a fence, giving them plenty of reinforcement for noticing and disengaging from the other dog. Once both dogs can remain calm in the presence of the other dog across the barrier, the barrier is removed and they are introduced by leash. Jill and Sam use verbal cues to call the dogs away and reinforce the dogs for disengagement. As you will see in the video, the little dog, Jack, gets excited easily. This excitement can overwhelm the larger dog, so Jill and Sam ensure that the dogs are given plenty of space. They also keep moving along on their walk so that the little dog is distracted by the environment and all of the enticing smells. In no time, the foursome is walking calmly and enjoying the hike together!
