introducing leg weaves to a puppy
Leg weaves can be taught to dogs of all ages—including puppies! One easy way for you to begin to teach a puppy leg weaves is by using a lure: hold a treat in your hand and guide your puppy through your legs. In this video, Michele Pouliot holds the treat close to a puppy’s nose and then gradually moves it in a circular motion. When the puppy is following the treat consistently, Michele entices the puppy to follow the treat through her legs; gradually, she moves the treat and the puppy in a full circle around her leg. To help solidify the behavior, Michele alternates legs so that the puppy is following the treat around her left leg and then her right leg. As the puppy becomes more proficient with leg weaves, Michele begins incorporating verbal cues without luring. Remember to reward your dog intermittently to keep the motivation high and the training fun!
