helping shy puppies socialize
When you are socializing shy pups, it is important to provide appropriate opportunities and build positive interactions slowly. Introduce a shy pup to one puppy at a time, starting with a puppy that is calm and well-socialized. In this video by KPA Faculty Member Andre Yeu, shy Husky pup Mishka is being introduced to Lucy. They begin on opposite sides of a gate where they can see one another, but the barrier ensures that Mishka feels safe. Once Mishka is comfortable around Lucy, the barrier is removed and the puppies can meet face-to-face. Lucy is kept on a leash in case things get too intense; she is offered treats to remain calm while Mishka gets to know her. Soon, the puppies are ready to play! Lucy remains leashed and the puppies are supervised closely so that the handlers can intervene if play becomes too rough or if either puppy seems overwhelmed.
Remember, each puppy is unique and the socialization process may take time. Be patient and allow shy puppies to progress at their own pace. With consistent effort and positive experiences, puppies will, over time, become more confident and comfortable in social situations.
