handling at home
A healthy dog is a happy dog, so it’s important to catch health problems before they occur. Teaching your dog to be comfortable with wellness checks at home helps you catch problems early. It also helps to set up your dog for success at the vet so that when it is time for a visit, your dog will already be comfortable with handling—from nose to tail!
In this video, KPA CTP Anna Wong demonstrates how she incorporates checking her dog Kempie for foxtails into their post-hike wipe-down routine. When each touch is paired with treats, Kempie learns that handling can be fun! “Training helps your dog learn to be comfortable with handling. You can teach your dog that she has a choice about when and how you touch her,” says Anna. “When Kempie pulls her back right leg away, I let it go but still reinforce her. I worked on several behaviors in small sessions over years to get to the place where she chooses to cooperate in her handling.”
You can use the same handling skills to help keep your dog healthy and set up your dog for success for future vet visits. If you notice any signs of stress, such as lip-licking, yawning, panting, averting her gaze, pulling body parts away, or moving away, you should stop and decrease your criteria.
