Fun tricks for dogs in shelters
As you will see in this video by KPA CTP Zach Ruth, the “wave” behavior is a simple yet powerful gesture that can help dogs open doors to their forever homes. To teach this behavior, ask the dog to “sit.” Hold a treat in your closed hand and present the hand to the dog. Most dogs will try to reach out and paw your hand. When the dog touches your hand with a paw, immediately offer a treat. Once the dog is targeting your hand with a paw consistently, present your hand again. Wait a moment before offering the treat so that the dog keeps the paw raised. As soon as the dog holds a paw up, even for a brief moment, click to mark the behavior, and then give the dog the treat. As the dog becomes more proficient with the "wave" cue, you can fade out the lure and add verbal and visual cues. Remember to reward the dog each time after a successful wave!
People are more likely to adopt dogs that they make connections with. A simple wave can be the key to unlocking the hearts of potential adopters and providing second chances to wonderful animals that deserve a happy life. Teaching shelter dogs tricks also provides enrichment by engaging their minds, promoting physical activity, and boosting their confidence, leading to happier and more adoptable pets.
