building duration behaviors
Whenever you train a new behavior, be sure to start with a very short duration, 1-2 seconds for example. Then build the duration one second at a time. If your dog gets up before the click, go back to a shorter interval and add one second at a time until your dog is successful. In this video, KPA CTP Logan Buie is working with her dog, JJ, on building duration in muzzle training. JJ is already comfortable placing his face in the muzzle, so now they are working on holding that position for longer periods of time. With patience and step-by-step planning, you and your dog can apply these same techniques to any behavior!
