april 2021 KPA CTP of the Month
The in-depth training offered through the DTP was eye-opening for Brittany. “There is more to it than just click/treat,” she explains. “You have to be dedicated to the science and open yourself up to learning the art of communicating with animals.” Brittany says that she “soaked up every minute” of the fun program.
The program was challenging, of course, as were the logistics of completing it. Brittany had to take time off from work to travel to the workshops. “Luckily for me, I owned my own business and worked my schedule around the program’s schedule.” Even if a trainer had to juggle the KPA CTP program with fulltime vet technician work, as Brittany would have had to in another stage of her career, “I would still recommend the program to anyone interested in training!”
After completing the program, Brittany felt more confident in her training abilities and the cases she could take on. “Karen Pryor Academy launched me forward in my professional career.” Brittany went on to launch a successful business (Companion Pet Behavior Solutions in Louisville, Kentucky) that specializes in both dogs and cats. She reports that she has built a strong reputation and is “highly recommended” in her community. “Since clicker training is such an amazing communication tool, I am able to work with clients and their pets on behavioral concerns beyond obedience,” says Brittany. “I specialize in aggression issues, anxiety issues, veterinary stress, and more, with both canine and feline family pets.”
Karen Pryor Academy launched me forward in my professional career.
Brittany believes that KPA and clicker training have taught her the true meaning of patience, something that has been helpful In other areas of her life. “I communicate with understanding and empathy in my conversations and interactions with clients, family, friends, and people I meet in everyday life.” For Brittany, “clicker is a language and barrier breaker.”
Learning is a theme in Brittany’s life. “I am passionate about animal behavior and am always striving to be better.” In addition to her KPA CTP qualifications, Brittany is a licensed veterinary tech (LVT) with the following certifications: IAABC-CDBC (International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants-Certified Dog Behavior Consultant), Fear Free Elite Certified Professional, Low Stress Handling Certified Silver. She has attended Clicker Expo every year since 2018. “It is honestly my favorite conference!”
Finishing up her VTS (Behavior), Brittany’s next goals include IAABC-CCBC (Certified Cat Behavior Consultant) certification, CCPDT’s (Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers) Separation Anxiety certification, the Aggressive Dog training program with Michael Shikashio, and Family Paws certification.
Brittany hired her first employee recently and is excited by her professional and business growth. “Being a boss is new for me. I think that the skills that I have acquired from KPA will help guide me in this new adventure.”
