Boom, Bang: Solutions for Sound Sensitivities
live with Debbie Martin
A KPA LIVE!™ Class featuring real-time training and coaching WITH Debbie
Help your dog find solace from scary sounds through sound sensitivity training
Join Debbie for this KPA LIVE class and learn to identify, modify, and alleviate canine sound sensitivitiesAn estimated one-third to two-thirds of dogs have noise aversions! If you see 12 dogs today, 4-8 of them are likely to develop noise aversions in their lifetimes. Not only can a fear of sounds be physiologically and emotionally damaging for dogs, but it can also strain the human-animal relationship. Left untreated, noise sensitivities often get worse and generalize to other sounds.
By understanding the ABCs in play and equipping yourself with the appropriate behavior modification strategies, you can help your dog—or your clients’ dogs—minimize or alleviate fear of noise altogether.
In this four-unit LIVE! Class, Debbie will coach you as you learn tips, tools, strategies, and techniques to mitigate and address canine noise sensitivities and phobias. If you work with dogs professionally, the information in this class will help you identify noise-sensitivity challenges and assist dogs and their guardians with tackling this multifaceted, progressive, and sometimes debilitating issue. If you are a pet guardian who has noticed that your dog is particularly alert to sounds, can be slow to recover, or has an intense fear of specific sounds, this class will help you identify and train potential therapeutic coping strategies for your dog.
All students will learn about and practice:
- identifying the ABCs of sound sensitivities
- using environmental modification to set up your learner for success
- training and behavior modification strategies to minimize or alleviate a fear of noises
Excel students will learn about and practice:
- identifying the ABCs in their own home environments
- a multi-part plan for minimizing or alleviating their dogs’ sound sensitivities
- a broad range of approaches so that the skills from this class can be used with new dogs and new sensitivities
- skills to employ as they continue to work through sound sensitivities on their own

Here's What You'll Be Learning UNIT by UNIT
1
What Is All The Fuss About? Putting Noise Sensitivities Under A Microscope
In Unit 1, Debbie will introduce you to the general data on noise sensitivity in dogs as you gather the information you need to create an individualized plan for your dog. Excel students will share their ABC (Antecedent, Behavior, Consequences) discoveries, videos, and environmental-modification options in the discussion group
Topics Covered:
- Identifying the ABCs of noise events
- Tracking ABCs of noise events and obtaining video when possible
- Developing a list of possible environmental modifications/antecedent arrangements that can be applied to specific noise events
- Exploring relaxing stationary food dispensing toys and food options for your dog
2
Introduction To Behavior Modification And Coping Strategies
In Unit 2, you will explore the role of higher-order conditioning and its possible link to comorbid behavioral diagnoses. With environmental modifications in place, Debbie will introduce you to various behavior modification strategies for minimizing noise-related fear and anxiety. Some tactics will be geared to events that happen primarily when the dog is at home, and others will focus on contexts away from home. Excel students will practice ambulatory behaviors and introduce a stationary safe place mat, add a cue, and begin to generalize the behavior.
Topics Covered:
- Identifying strategies for responding when your dog notices sounds
- Discovering possible safe place locations in the home environment
- Teaching and practicing at least two ambulatory behaviors that could be used to help your dog out of a noise-event situation, regardless of the context
- Introducing a mobile non-slip safe place mat, putting it on cue, and starting to generalize it to various environments
3
Desensitization and Safe Place Training
In Unit 3, you will learn and begin to implement desensitization strategies. Debbie will coach you through testing neutral and potentially fear-inducing controllable sounds and then show you how to incorporate them into safe place training as a distraction. After this unit, you will also have built a rich understanding of your dog’s body language. Excel students will test and incorporate sounds into their safe place training.
Topics Covered:
- Identifying controllable neutral and potentially fear-inducing sounds for your dog
- Recognizing subtle signs your dog displays when uncomfortable
- Incorporating various sounds with safe place training
4
Cue Transfer and Taking It On The Road
In Unit 4, you will explore advanced and optional skills for addressing noise sensitivities. First, Debbie will coach you through a transfer cue process so that you can teach your dog that specific sounds are the cue for the dog to seek out their safe place. You will then explore modifications that can be made to your setup to create a safe place when outside of the home. Excel teams will work through the cue transfer process with Debbie.
Topics Covered:
- Making specific sounds the cues for the dog to seek out their safe place
- Utilizing safe place training outside of the home
