In Teach Your Dog to “Leave It,” Karen Pryor Academy (KPA) faculty member Juliana DeWillems demonstrated the first step to teaching the “leave it” behavior: rewarding eye contact. In Part 2 of this series, KPA CTP Imogen Poropat works with her client and her client’s dog, Lou, to demonstrate how to use this skill in a real-world setting.
To teach this behavior, she waits for Lou to look at the object. Then she gives the cue “leave it” and clicks/rewards for eye contact. Similar to the steps in indoor training, Imogen began by presenting a low-value object (toy), progressing to a middle-value object (trash), and finally moving on to a high-value item (Lou’s mom’s slipper—Lou likes to steal it and play keep away!). As you’ll see, Lou absolutely crushes her training!
