A KPA LIVE!™ Class with a twist! featuring real-time training and coaching WITH amber
raise the bar for fun outings with your dog!
Join Amber Quann and learn the skills that enable you both to enjoy the neighborhood breweries and cafes you love in ways you never thought possibleIt’s the dream; chilling at your local brewery or grabbing a coffee and a croissant with a friend while your dog relaxes beside you.
Breweries, restaurants, coffee shops, wineries, and cafes everywhere are becoming more welcoming to our dogs. However, distractions in these spaces—tasty temptations, brewery brouhaha, friendly strangers, tight quarters, new smells, and more can make these outings anything but relaxed for us, our dogs, and the cafe staff! As we like to say, the only “chaser” we want comes with a beverage.
If we want to enjoy these fun but distracting environments with our dogs, we need to teach them HOW to do that successfully. Join Drink With Your Dog® program creator Amber Quann in this four-week, four-unit, LIVE virtual class teaching top-shelf brewery and cafe manners for your dog!
Amber helps you distill complex brewery and cafe manners into bite-sized component behaviors and builds them into practical sequences using effective, positive training.
You and your dog will learn skills such as:
- Building comfortable relaxation with duration in a public setting (your dog, not you!)
- A bar order routine— a trained behavior sequence—that will wow the crowd
- Teamwork leash walking to get from the bar to your table without spilling your beer
- Rapid recovery for your dog from startling sounds like plates falling or glass shattering
- And much more!
As you and your dog train together, you will learn to use elements from the brewery and cafe environment as the cues for certain behaviors as well as learn to “brewery-proof” these behaviors from the distractions commonly found in these settings. In a nutshell, the training is designed to help your dog expect the unexpected so that you and your dog have awesome experiences.
Drink With Your Dog® LIVE! includes Amber’s week-by-week online curriculum that coordinates with her weekly real-time classes over Zoom as well as an online social space to post videos of progress, share successes, receive or watch feedback, and get questions answered. Each of the four units of weekly lessons has clear goals, video demonstrations, and detailed instructions for the practice sessions with your dog.
Classes are recorded in the event that you can’t attend.
This LIVE class is the first online version of Amber’s popular in-person program for dog owners and their brewery pups; so now you can learn these skills wherever you are, on a schedule that works for you, and you won’t miss Happy Hour!
Amber's mission is to help people get out and about with their dogs more often, safely, and enjoyably. In addition to her classes, Amber regularly works with local businesses on how to make their spaces even more welcoming for dogs and their guardians.
So let’s raise both a glass and the behavior bar together. Join Amber for Drink With Your Dog® LIVE! Cheers!

Here's What You'll Be Learning UNIT by UNIT
1
Set UP YOUR BREWERY foundation SKILLS
In Unit #1 we’re brewing up foundational behaviors that are essential to brewery and cafe manners. Amber will build on these skills each week to help you craft your dog’s brewery behavior sequence and add the environmental cues and distractions you would typically encounter in brewery and cafe settings. You will also learn about the Drink With Your Dog® Project and how partnerships between dog trainers, dog guardians, and brewery staff is creating more dog-friendly breweries and brewery-friendly dogs nationwide. Amber will share her personal tips for setting up your dog for the most success during your brewery or cafe visits.
The lecture, discussion, training plans, and exercises in this unit help you build several foundation behaviors that will be put together into the “brewery behavior sequence” later in the course. The main focus of this week will be a discussion of relaxation—what it is (and isn’t) and how we teach our dogs to truly relax in a public setting like a cafe. You will also get started building the skills needed to get you and your dog from the parking lot to the door of the brewery, including calm in the car while parking, engaging with you in a new environment, and leash-walking skills to get to the door of the brewery with composure.
2
FROM THE DOOR TO THE BAR
In Unit #2, you will build on the skills you established with your dog in Unit #1! The lecture, discussion, training plans, and exercises in this unit help you advance your brewery behavior sequence from the door to the bar, with a focus on leash walking past distractions and a duration stay at the bar that is cued by the brewery environment! You will also continue building your dog’s relaxation skill by adding a cue and increasing duration.
As a Bonus Skill, Amber will teach a behavior chain for helping our dogs to recover from startling experiences that might happen in the brewery or cafe, such as someone dropping a glass, a child running by, or another dog barking. You will begin working on this recovery from a startle behavior sequence during your hands-on practice with your dog in preparation for your second live class meeting.
In our virtual classroom, our Excel students will demonstrate their skills progress, get coaching from Amber, share their experience, and ask questions about these next steps. We’ll also take a look ahead to the skills taught in our next unit and Amber will answer questions from Engage experience students.
3
fROM THE BAR TO THE TABLE, TO RELAXATION
Unit #3 will add the last few steps of the brewery behavior sequence so that you and your dog can progress from the car to the door, to the bar, to the table, and finally, to your dog relaxing under the table while you both enjoy your time together. We’ll work on adding some additional behavior cues that are specific to the brewery and cafe environments so that picking up your beer (or your coffee) from the bar is a clear cue for your dog to leash walk by your side (yay for no spilled drinks!). You will continue building on your skills by getting your trained behavior sequence under stimulus control for the brewery environment. Lastly, we’ll add the final pieces to our relaxation behavior: distractions and additional duration.
As a Bonus Skill, Amber will discuss Leave It for the brewery context. You and your dog may already have a Leave It skill—we’ll build on that to make sure that our dogs are ready for different brewery-specific scenarios, like a dropped and shattered pint glass or tidbits of very delicious food accidentally dropping on the floor!
In our virtual classroom, our Excel students will show off their progress on the skills built up to this point, demonstrate the process of putting their behaviors on brewery/cafe-specific environmental cues, get coaching from Amber, share their experiences, and ask questions about these next steps. We’ll also talk about the links to the skills taught in our next unit (including some creative ways to practice in new environments) and Amber will answer questions from Engage experience students in the chat.
4
TIME TO BREWERY AND CAFE HOP!
In Unit #4, Amber will encourage you to take your brewery and cafe skills on the road to practice in new environments with your dog! We’ll discuss the best ways to generalize your dog’s skills to any cafe-style environment, and how to handle common environmental and training challenges found in these scenarios. This final unit will help you understand how to fine-tune your training plan so that you can help your dog maintain their brewery and cafe skills for many years to come!
The last Bonus Skill will be a discussion of calm greetings with other people and dogs in the brewery or cafe setting. Amber will share her thoughts on how often, when, and how we should encourage our dogs to greet others in the brewery and cafe settings, as well as how to get the polite greeting that you desire between your dog and friendly strangers of both two- or four-legged varieties.
In our final virtual classroom, our Excel students will demonstrate their brewery behavior sequence skills progress in new environments and receive expert tips to prepare for their final SkillsCheck evaluation. This is the last chance to get live coaching from Amber, share your experiences, and for both Excel and Engage experience students to ask questions about spending time in breweries and cafes with your dog.
