Important: Dog-reactivity and aggression cases vary widely in their complexity and potential for danger to instructors, clients, dogs, and others. The course will not make you an “expert" in all types of dog aggression. That knowledge is earned only with more experience than can be gained in this course alone.

This course will improve your confidence and skill in working with dogs exhibiting unwanted behavior including various types of reactivity and aggression, allowing you to help more dogs and expand your client services.

If you already have experience with dog aggression, you'll learn an invaluable, deep methodology to add to your toolkit.
If you have little or no prior experience working with reactive and aggressive dog behavior, you'll get the tools and knowledge to confidently begin to expand your services into this high-demand area of behavior cases.

Emma Parsons provides up to four personal, 1:1 coaching sessions via Zoom plus up to 10 hours of additional feedback on your video submissions, written assignments, and other ongoing questions all via email with you. This course is for trainers who currently work with, or who would like to work with, clients whose dogs have behavioral issues including dog-dog aggression and dog-people aggression as well as other over-arousal related behaviors (eg., excited greetings). This course focuses on 1-on-1 work with reactive or aggressive dog behavior clients, in-person and remotely.

If you already have experience with dog aggression, you'll learn an invaluable, deep methodology to add to your toolkit.

This course is written for trainers working with clients, but trainers or pet guardians looking to work with their own dogs will also find this course extremely beneficial.

The course does not provide foundational training in marker-based training, clicker training, learning theory, and teaching, so you should already have a strong background in marker-based positive reinforcement training and related skills. Trainers should also have a strong background in teaching clients.

Emma Parsons is a renowned canine reactivity and aggressive behavior specialist, teacher and trainer, dog-sports competitor, author of three popular books on aggression and reactivity, and the creator of the Click to Calm protocol for which she was awarded the Animal Welfare Advancement Award from the Animal Behavior Management Alliance (ABMA).

Emma loves dogs, dog training, and teaching dog training. She is a Karen Pryor Academy faculty member and has been an instructor within the KPA flagship Dog Trainer Professional program since its inception, earning rave reviews from her students. Emma is also a long-standing member of the ClickerExpo faculty, delivering standing-room-only lectures and Learning Labs related to dog behavior and training. Emma is known for her empathetic but no-nonsense approach and her entertainingly delightful Boston accent!

A mentee of Karen Pryor early in her career, Emma was driven to find solutions to aggressive behavior because of Ben, her golden retriever— both her most demanding client and her best teacher. With Karen's encouragement, Emma focused on managing and rehabilitating reactive and aggressive dog behavior and developed breakthrough marker-based positive reinforcement methods thereby helping Ben and, eventually, thousands of other dogs live rich and relaxed lives.

Emma has authored three popular books on reactive and aggressive dog behavior: Click to Calm: Healing the Aggressive Dog; (nominated for DWAA's training book of the year), Teaching the Reactive Dog Class: Leading the Journey from Reactivity to Reliability; and The New Click to Calm: Solutions for All Dogs in a Challenging World. For fun, Emma is a successful competitor in Obedience and Agility, earning titles at the national level with several of her dogs.

In addition to being a Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner (KPA CTP) Emma is a Certified Dog Behavior Consultant (CDBC) and holds a BA degree from the University of Massachusetts Lowell. She shares her life with her husband, Greg, and their three clicker-trained competition obedience/agility dogs: Border Collie Joshua-Hunt, Golden Retriever Sprit-Rayne, and 2018 Golden Retriever Hall-of-Fame inductee and 5-time Agility Champion Austyn-Roque.

This course is for experienced marker-based positive reinforcement trainers who want to expand their business services to include 1-on-1 reactive or aggressive dog behavior clients in-person or remotely.

The course uniquely integrates core ideas and principles from all three of Emma's books and client work. The course provides extensive support and feedback as you develop your knowledge and skills.

To help you learn, students receive detailed feedback and assessments in each Unit. Students meeting the criteria can earn, from Emma, the KPA SkillCheck for the Click to Calm methodology.

The course content includes many real-life videos and client-ready teaching materials (i.e., communications, exercises, and lessons) from Emma's personal collection of client work and training classes. After the course is over, you can stay connected to Emma and your fellow graduates plus get support via the online social group.

Note: While students are welcome to read any of Emma's books prior to enrollment, it is not a pre-requisite for taking the course.

We recommend building fluency in the course and protocol components with a more stable dog before implementing these skills to help dogs with greater behavioral complexity. While the protocol and skills taught in this course are applicable to and appropriate for all dogs, a less challenging dog will help students learn with less stress and gain the most from this course. You can also progress through this course with more than one dog at the same time or in sequence, starting with a less challenging dog and then using the acquired skills with a dog a who has more challenging or intense behaviors.

SkillCheck^TM is a formalized KPA method for teachers to provide feedback to students on the skills taught in a specific course. Unique SkillCheck criteria are developed for each KPA course or class that offers SkillCheck assessment.

In this course, SkillCheck is available and open to all students. You will receive an easy-to-digest assessment of your skill progress on the Click to Calm methodology and, if you complete the course and demonstrate proficiency, you will earn the SkillCheck designation for Click to Calm!

The SkillCheck™ designation means that you demonstrated competency in the specific skills taught in a KPA class or course.

While eligible students in the class receive the SkillCheck assessment, the SkillCheck designation is awarded only to those students who complete the class and meet the criteria for the specific skills in the class.

Students who achieve the SkillCheck designation can feel confident that they have the proficiency and understanding to apply the skills and continue advancing them.

Interested students can earn their SkillCheck in Click to Calm and will receive both a digital copy of that designation and a digital badge that can be displayed.

In order to earn your Click to Calm SkillCheck™ and badge you must submit the following for review:

Four 1-minute videos demonstrating successful training of a set of Basic behaviors from the course
Three 1-minute videos demonstrating successful training of Emergency Foundation behaviors from the course
Nine 1-2 minute videos demonstrating successful implementation of the stages of the Click to Calm protocol
One written, short-answer questionnaire demonstrating an understanding of how to apply the Click to Calm protocol across various contexts

If you earn the SkillCheck™ designation in Click to Calm, you will be notified by your teacher or course administrator and provided with the SkillCheck Click to Calm digital badge for your use. You may also claim in written format that you earned your "KPA SkillCheck: Click to Calm."

Please specify that you earned a SkillCheck with the specific reference to the skill/course in which it was earned and that it was earned with Karen Pryor Academy (KPA); all of these elements must always be included. You can find an example of the badge in this section!

IMPORTANT:

The KPA SkillCheck designation is the mark of competency earned from a specific KPA course.
