april 2022 KPA CTP of the Month

The logic and systematic approach of the DTP program appealed to Imogen. “The course took us through the different ways of creating and altering behavior.” Imogen also loved the strong focus on science and the opportunity to pose questions. What was most challenging for Imogen? “Training to a deadline!”
For Imogen, one of the most significant advantages of being a KPA CTP has been the community of like-minded trainers. “I love seeing other people's ways of dealing with challenges, their new ideas, and even trainer struggles. Sometimes they are struggling with the same things I am.” The core principles of clicker training have boosted Imogen’s confidence. “I now have the confidence to tackle many new challenges because I understand how to slow down, break everything into component parts, problem-solve, and create potential solutions—handling both canine behavior challenges and client issues.”

One of the most significant advantages of being a KPA CTP has been the community of like-minded trainers.

When she works with dogs and clients through her business Canny Dog Science-Based Dog Training, and in her non-professional interactions, Imogen always tries to set appropriate criteria and break down desired change into achievable pieces. “I have varying success in my everyday life!” She also tries to ensure that she limits inadvertent punishment in interactions. “I set myself up to reinforce, rather than punish, those around me. It can be a challenge, because sometimes I am not aware that something is punishing to someone until after it happens, but I try to learn from the interaction and not repeat it.”
Imogen has completed the Atlas Assistance Dogs certification program and hopes to enroll in the KPA Puppy Start Right for Instructors course when her schedule permits. She is considering other educational options, too. If she enrolls in another degree program, Imogen plans to use the principles of clicker training to break down that process and be successful. “It may be hardest to apply positive principles to yourself, but that philosophy and strategy can be very helpful in achieving large goals.”
