- Summary
Janece Rollet is a canine behaviorist and a charter member and long-time conference committee chairperson of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT). She has been training animals professionally since 1988. In addition to meeting the needs of her pet-animal clients, Janece trains service dogs for clientele with a variety of physical challenges, works with clients and their animals to prevent or solve behavioral problems, and is a consultant to Alaskan dog mushers whose working and racing teams consist of rescued Alaskan huskies and husky mixes. Janece’s training methods emphasize the importance of the personal bond of mutual trust between clients and their dogs.
- Bio
Growing up deaf in a hearing world, body language was Janece’s first language, and her ability to observe nuances of non-verbal communication helped her relate closely to nearly all the animals that she encountered during her rural upbringing. Family, friends, and neighbors took notice of her abilities and frequently brought her ill or injured small animals to nurse back to health. By the age of 11, Janece was an accomplished equestrian and began her first job, as a horse trainer. Her early mentor started her right, teaching Janece the basics of operant conditioning and force-free training methods. During her youth, Janece trained any species of animal available, even training mice, guinea pigs, and hamsters to do agility. During college she worked as a “midwife” to thoroughbreds, helping to bring over 500 youngsters into the world.
A pioneer in the science and art of clicker training in her state, Janece began training dogs professionally in 1988, working in malls and classrooms at a community college. She opened Shepherd’s Crossing Boarding and Training in 1996. She continued her education even while working fulltime, completing 120 hours of Marian and Bob Bailey’s Operant Conditioning and Behavioral Analysis course in 1999 and earning her certification in principals and techniques of behavior modification from Purdue University in 1999. She opened her second training business, Dogs’ Day, Inc. (Daycare and Training) in 2000. Much of Janece’s behavior modification work is a result of over 200 veterinarian referrals each year.
Janece keeps pace with the rapidly expanding scientific understanding of animal behavior and training by dedicating more than 100 hours to her own continuing education each year. She is a charter member of APDT, serving on APDT’s Conference Committee for 13 years, and as co-chair of that committee for 7 years. Janece and her training partner, Ellen Sam, were jointly awarded the coveted APDT Ian Dunbar Member of the Year award for 2005.
