- Bio
Debbie received a BS degree from The Ohio State University in human ecology, and an associate of applied science degree in veterinary technology from Columbus State Community College. She has been a fulltime registered veterinary technician since 1996, and has been actively involved in the field of animal behavior. Debbie is the animal behavior technician for Veterinary Behavior Consultations, LLC, in New Orleans, a mobile veterinary clinic with practice limited to animal behavior. She assists Dr. Kenneth Martin, her husband, during in-home behavior consultations.
Debbie is a Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) in Behavior. She is the president elect for the Academy of Veterinary Behavior Technicians (www.AVBT.net). Debbie is an active member and the previous recording secretary for the SVBT (Society of Veterinary Behavior Technicians). She is a member of APDT (Association of Pet Dog Trainers), and was the first Certified Pet Dog Trainer (CPDT) in the state of Louisiana. Debbie frequently lectures to veterinary professionals on animal behavior, and has also published several articles on that topic.
Hooked on clicker training since she enrolled her 7-year-old shepherd mix, Snickers, in a class in 1999, Debbie utilizes clicker training with her own pets as well as her clients' dogs and cats whenever possible. Debbie believes that clicker training not only enhances the bond and fluency of communication with pets, but is also instrumental in behavior modification. The uses for clicker training are endless! Because no two pets are the same, Debbie designs individualized training plans to meet the needs of pets and clients.
In 2009 Debbie and her husband wrote a book on normal development and training in dogs; Puppy Start Right: Foundation Training for the Companion Dog.
In her free time, Debbie enjoys mountain biking, kayaking, hiking, and training and relaxing with her dogs and husband. Currently, she shares her home with three Belgian Malinois, Jazmin, Iliana and Polo, and a one-eyed beagle/terrier mix, Iris. Debbie is training her Malinois, Jazmin, for rally-obedience and agility.
